Labor Day is a federal holiday celebrating the economic and social contributions of workers; it is celebrated separately than International Worker’s Day. It is believed that in 1882, Matthew Maguire, the secretary for the Central Labor Union of New York, was the first person to suggest the idea of a “Labor Day”. In 1887, Oregon actually made it a state holiday. So, by the time it became a national holiday in 1894, 30 states were already celebrating the event.
In the summer of 1894, a national railroad strike involving the American Railway Union and the Pullman company that shut down much of the nation’s railway traffic west of Detroit. After a few deaths, Congress voted to approve rush legislature that made Labor Day a national holiday, in an attempt to placate the unionists. President Grover Cleveland signed it into law a mere 6 days after the end of the strike.
Labor Day is come to represent the end of summer for many Americans. This weekend marks the beginning of school for many of our youths and the end of summer vacation. But, for many Americans, Labor Day weekend marks the beginning of football season. The NCAA first games are over the weekend, with the NFL regular season starts the following Thursday.
